about

Also honouring my recent obsession with the early 70s, this is a travelling song in the tradition of Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’”, however it’s lyrically a bit more sinister and dark, describing the difficulties of communication between travellers on suburban trains. This tune also provides a glimpse into my love of country-influenced ballads. For some reason I find it difficult to get away from the hillbilly rhythm of this song and it usually pops up at least twice on my solo records.

lyrics

I met a stranger on the train to Alamein
So familiar, he could’ve been an old friend of mine
Standing all alone, he’s decorated by a paisley tie

Oh, how easily we slide
Oh how easily we slide
Oh how easily we slide

Our conversation led to an awkward, strange impasse
I offered money he was offended, left aghast
I tried to save it, found that the good will weren’t to last

Oh, how easily we slide
Oh how easily we slide
Oh how easily we slide

I am a stranger, I am a toxic passenger
I come with baggage, come with a pack of lozenges
Don’t know where I’m going, don’t know which train I’ll end up on
Don’t try to save me, don’t help me find my way back home

Oh, how easily we slide
Oh how easily we slide
Oh how easily we slide
