about

Another country song in the style of ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow’ by The Byrds and lyrically kind of inspired by the yearnings for childhood dreams in songs like ‘100 Years Ago’ by The Stones. I’m a big fan of songs that harmonise from start to finish, not always easy to write. The ever-present harmony in this track was beautifully provided by Mandy Kerr. Lyrically this song gets darker in the 2nd verse and this is the 2nd hillbilly rhythm track on the record.

lyrics

There’s a place in my mind where the country carpet winds and it
Couldn’t make a bright-eyed boy feel better
Pastel hues, sparkling haze, I’m astonished, I’m amazed how my
Memory recalls it to the letter
In the country, it seems, you’ll experience extremes so the
Sunshine and the rain will serve you better
'Gainst all odds I’m alive, some surprised how I survived with a
Maximum exposure to the weather

On a quiet day, the yearning leads me so far away
On a lonely day, I wish I might have something to say

When the sun rose each day, I would chase the pain away while the
Factories spilled pollution in the river
Was a girl that I loved living in the hills above and I
Tried with all my heart not to upset her
When the trucks carted trees by the house at Wounded Knee and the
Forest knew eventually we’d forget her
When my girl took her leave in the morning, I would grieve and I
Prayed I wouldn’t feel like this forever

On a quiet day, the yearning leads me so far away
On a lonely day, I wish I might have something to say
